September 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians of 7C Math Students,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. It will be a year of transition for the students in all areas, including Math. There is a lot more algebra requiring abstract thinking that may not be strong in preteens. I will be working to help them move from concrete thinking by reviewing as we extend concepts throughout the year. At the Back to School Night on Monday, Sept. 25th, and in the bi-weekly newsletters, there will be information about the content for the year.

There are a couple of ways your student can get some extra help as needed. I offer help after school from 2-2:45 PM. I am usually here Mondays and Tuesdays but will post the specific days weekly so students can be sure. I allow students that receive a 75 or below on a quiz or test to redo it at home (the incorrect problems only) after coming after school for extra help. This needs to be completed within 2 weeks of receiving the graded quiz/test. This new grade is averaged with the old. You can keep track of the grades on Aspen.

There will be nightly homework that should take about 15-20 minutes on average. Below is a checklist the students received to help guide them. Students can let me know if the homework is taking them much longer. Projects will be posted on the class blog (msms7cmath.blogspot.com). They will be broken down into parts with specific due dates so I can be sure any questions/problems are addressed.

Extra credit options may be available. Extra credit is due one week before grades close – no exceptions. The extra credit, counted as a quiz, will be graded on adherence to the requirements and quality of the work. These will be posted on the blog.

I look forward to a great year with your child. If you need to reach me, my email address is miley@bpsk12.org. My phone is (781) 270-2969. I hope to see you on Sept. 25th.

Sincerely,

Ellen Miley
